Website and platform migrations are a big job. Even small websites (10-25 pages) will require adequate attention to detail when transitioning to a new platform or when undergoing a domain name change. There are many action items that may be resolved by your new content management system (like Shopify, Wix, Square Space, WordPress, BigCommerce, etc) but many action items are still up to the site owner and their team to resolve. The majority of these action items will directly affect your organic search rankings and SEO equity.

A few very important “to-do’s” include creating a 301 redirect map (so you don't lose all the SEO value you’ve obtained), generating an XML sitemap, optimizing your new robots.txt file, declaring canonicals, ensuring caching is set up correctly on your new site, optimizing the 404 page, resolving core web vital issues and more.

Not paying attention to your new website’s technical SEO can cost you BIG TIME when you go to relaunch your site. Even if all of your content is squared away and perfect, don't overlook your technical SEO site migration action items or your organic search traffic could disappear overnight (literally). The goal of a pre-migration SEO is not to necessarily fix all of these issues, but to ensure that the new website is not inheriting any of the old issues and is not making drastic changes to areas that will immediately affect Google’s indexing process as it crawls your new site and compares it to your old site (an important part of Google and Bing ensuring they’re still serving the right content to people if you were previously ranking for said queries/keywords).

Our technical SEO services help to uncover these issues and develop a game plan before you pull the trigger on migrating your site.

Note: We usually act as a subject matter expert liason with your chosen developer to complete the actual transition of your website. We do not code websites and do not currently provide all-in-one packages to transition your site to a new content management system.

Pre-migration SEO audit:

  • Conduct a comprehensive audit of the website's SEO and organic search ranking metrics

  • Understand total backlinks from external websites, highest value pages for SEO traffic, previous site architecture, and unhealthy SEO issues that might be migrated over

  • Ensure site architecture will not change much during migration

Game plan development:

  • Uncover issues and develop a game plan before migrating site

  • Ensure new website is not inheriting old issues and is not making drastic changes that will immediately affect Google's indexing process

Technical site migration action items:

  • A new content management system may resolve some action items, but many are up to site owner and their team to resolve

  • The majority of action items will directly affect organic search rankings and SEO equity

  • Important "to-do's" include creating a 301 redirect map, generating an XML sitemap, optimizing new robots.txt file, declaring canonicals, ensuring caching is set up correctly, optimizing 404 page, resolving core web vital issues and more.
